The Process

Wide Plank Hardwood ensures that the flooring that we build is able to be completely customized by our clients. From the structure of the hardwood, to the type of finish that is applied, we want to work with you to create a unique, customized floor and accessories.

Build

Choosing the structure of hardwood is based on sub-floor, heating system and area of installation. Wide Plank Hardwood produces high quality Solid and Engineered products to provide flooring that will perform effectively in a wide range of living environments.

Our Engineered floors are milled to just under 3/4 of an inch at 17.8 mm and is suited for concrete sub-floors and radiant in floor heat.

Our Solid floors are precisely milled to 3/4 of an inch and suited for a plywood sub-floor, or above grade concrete, insulated crawl spaces and areas with forced air heating.

Lengths are random with a high percentage of long planks. In Engineered, boards can reach up to 10 foot lengths, and Solid boards can reach up to 12 foot lengths.

Species

Wide Plank Hardwood sources high quality lumber primarily from North America, with the exception of a couple of exotic woods. Each species is unique, varying widely in what they offer visually and in functionality as the hardness, colour and grain pattern differs. Selecting the right species is based on personal preferences and on the type of performance you are hoping to see from the floor.

Grade

Grade determines the number of knots and the grain patterns that exist within a floor. A Character or Rustic grade will provide plenty of prominent knots, a Number 1 grade will have a few knots scattered across the occasional board, and a Select grade will have little to no knots. Moving into a premium cut, the Rift and Quartered will have straight grain lines and flecks across the boards, and a Rift Only will have straight grains without flecks to produce a very clean and continuous appearance.

Width

While we specialize in wide planks, our available widths begin at 3 inches, and reach up to 8 inches in Engineered, and sometimes as wide as 12 inches in Solid.
We provide options for fixed widths or for random width flooring to give some added variability.

Options

Options are an added step to the manufacturing process which add an extra element of character and texture to a floor. There are a number of different options as well as customized variability for the level to which they are applied, making Wide Plank Hardwood floors beautiful, unique and catered specifically to our clients wants and wishes.

Colour

Our unique colouring process allows all of our stains to be replicated, tweaked or altered to come up with a colour that is perfect for you. Stain will take differently to certain species and grades of wood, as well to each board individually, as no two boards are exactly the same, which further increases the uniqueness of each floor. The base of our stains is made from all natural oils which are environmentally friendly and do not produce off gassing.

Finish

Oil

An Oil finish is an environmentally friendly product which integrates into the wood to keep its natural feel and texture. It draws out the grain and the characteristics of the wood while adding a layer of protection. Since the finish is integrated, Oiled floors can be refinished as many times as required in the lifespan of the floor, which will keep the floor looking fresh and healthy over the years.

Water-Based Polyurethane

Water-Based Polyurethane is a finish which sits on top of the floor as another layer. It creates a strong, protective covering for the floor which is ideal for areas of high traffic, those with pets or in spaces that may be susceptible to water or other liquids being spilled onto it.
